In 1982, Banned Books Week was created as a response to the growing censorship that books in schools, bookstores, and libraries were facing.
I wanted to highlight the ways the internet has allowed us to access knowledge that was previously undisclosed to us, in an effort to celebrate the freedom to read.
A freedom that we still have to fight for.

In the material plane, the titles of the books are obscured by their ISBN — their International Standard Book Number.
Yet the titles become uncovered once light hits the canvas — something which is made possible through the use of technology.

This work consists of a diptych of holographic pigment ISBNs on canvas, published by Penguin, and a digital diptych projected onto the canvases that translates the ISBNs into their original titles.
The holographic pigment is thus activated by light.
