Synthetic world

Winner of the John Olsen Prize for Drawing 2021

This installation — made up of interactive websites, video projection, and 3D models — was the result of integrating the online with the offline.

A zone where we can laugh at the oddities the internet provides us, discover new subcultures we’ve never heard of, and experience a world which we view as so seperate to our “real life” in our real life. I used pieces from various internet phenomenons, such as slime videos, ASMR, millennial nostalgia, & the concept of the personas we create for social media.

This particular installation was based on the 3D artist, creating a parody of internet spaces where users of the program Blender (a free software for 3D modelling) come together to share their “beginner donuts” — an object which perfectly encapsulates the art form. The donut being an empty food; a reflection of fast food and a faster culture; which has now transformed into an item from the digital realm.

Inedible, perfect in its man-made imperfections, and a reflection of pop culture.

The interactive websites I made as part of this installation act as satirical microcosm of social media. A website full of fake accounts, fake bots, and fake advertisements — all a reflection of the real thing. I generated usernames, photo descriptions, and comments based off trends I observed on various social media sites — from Reddit to Instagram — in order to create the uncanny.
